On Feb. 5, fashion designer Jason Wu is launching a limited-edition line for Target. Wu became famous for designing Michelle Obama's inaugural gown. He's the latest high-end designer to partner with a mainstream retailer and offer his chic couture at cheap prices for the masses.
On a bitterly cold morning in Washington, D.C., last November, hundreds of fashionistas flooded the street in front of the low-priced fashion chain H&M. Italian luxury label Versace was launching a collection there, and customers were waiting for the doors to open.
Customers swarmed the store. Versace jackets that normally sell for thousands of dollars were selling here for a shockingly low $129.

"People were just taking handfuls, like straight off the rack," customer Ryan Charchian says. "Like, everything. I could only get like three items."

It used to be unthinkable for high-end designers to sell their clothes at mass retailers. But now they regularly team up with Gap, Macy's and Target to bring "cheap chic" to the masses.
The partnership is lucrative for both sides. Retailers gain cachet, lots of new customers and loads of publicity.

Designers make money because the retailer pays them to create a unique collection. Steven Kolb, head of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, says the payment can be anywhere from $200,000 up to $1 million, plus royalties.

And it's not just about the money.

Selena Simmons-Duffin/NPR When luxury label Versace launched a collection for H&M last November, customers lined up on the sidewalk to wait for the chain's Washington, D.C., store to open.

"It's different for designers at different points in their careers," he says. "For a more established designer, it can often help reinvent them."

Few people had heard of Missoni until the venerable Italian fashion house partnered with Target last year. The launch made headlines after Target's website crashed from all the traffic.
Some younger designers feared that selling clothes through a mass retailer would cheapen their nascent brand.

Gaby Basora, who launched a collection at Target in 2010, says that's because "you're bringing your DNA to the market at a lower cost."
She says the retailer was able to advertise for her in a way she could never have afforded herself.
"You know, I'm years away from putting my logo on the side of a bus that drives around New York City for all the world to appreciate," she says.

Designer Rogan Gregory has teamed up with Target twice.

"The exposure isn't taboo anymore, and the manufacturing process has gotten very sophisticated, so you can get really good quality at a low price," he says. "I think designers are actually surprised at how good a quality they get from Target."

And the cash from the deal can help young designers put on fashion shows and grow their main collection.

By now, it's become commonplace to sell cheap chic a few aisles over from diapers and light bulbs. Designer Jason Wu even considers it a badge of honor.

Paul Weber/Target Design house Missoni created this bicycle and other products for Target last year. On the day of the launch, a huge spike in traffic crashed the retailer's website.

"Target has a great legacy of great collaborations," he says, "designers like Missoni, who's legendary, and McQueen — just to be in such great company is a huge plus for me."

But not all haute couture designers want to offer up bargain versions of their fashions.

Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana recently told the industry publication Women's Wear Daily that low-priced fashion retailers like H&M are cheap and trashy — and that their clothes lack the quality of really high-priced fashion.

It was originally made for "an elite seminar given for business owners" (pretty damn strange business seminar we'd say) and was found in the AT&T Archives with verification from the Henson Archives. The robot, the special effects, the humorous script and plot twist are still on point almost 50 years later.

An unique type of non-profit, Obsessions Collective is a support system for artists without gallery representation and produce art purely because it's their calling. Their online site features artists chosen by the group's founder New York composer John Zorn and allows for direct artist-to-consumer purchases - 100% of all sales goes back to the artist. The goal is, according to the website, to celebrate and provide an outlet to the "honest, passionate, imaginative and technically proficient" who work "independently and around the established art scene, without the support or assistance from patrons or grants".

The private, specialized styling for which Lost Boys is recognized is becoming even more private and exclusive with the opening of members-only private styling studio for men, The Black Room. It opens, of course, this coming Black Friday.

Lost Boys owner Kelly Muccio said the concept came from the fact her “Lost Boys Style Bar” appointments had become increasingly popular and men kept requesting an exclusive and private space dedicated to individual need.

This is an invitation-only private style studio where the Lost Boys team will curate at look based on the client’s look. This will include one-on-one private styling appointments, wardrobe consulting and personal shopping. Additionally, the space will serve as a private gallery featuring a rotating series of fashion, art and trends. The décor will be altered every six months. Fashion designer Rogan Gregory will showcase first, displaying his art and hand crafted furniture.

For its first season this upcoming winter, The Black Room will launch designer collaborations and feature fresh collections in addition to hosting a series of private events with top chefs and mixologists.

“DC is at the center of a style revolution right now and the world is taking notice. The Black Room aspires to be the best style studio the world over,” said Muccio.

Every now and then we have visitors at the store who remember the old days (1970's - 1980's roughly) when 330 Bowery was home to the Bouwerie Lane Theater and the Jean Cocteau Repertory. A pioneering company, Cocteau staged plays that found a following in the off-off Broadway set that included style pioneers, art groupies and the most creative drag queens.

Some are documented in a book called IDOLS by Gilles Larrain, a beautiful volume filled with interesting and often inspiring portraits of said "magicians". The re-release of the book (originally released in the the 70's) is accompanied by an exhibit at Steven Kasher Gallery which runs until December 23rd. Enjoy!

Regulars at Georgetown men’s boutique Lost Boys know it’s the place to head for pain-free shopping. Amid brown leather easy chairs and exposed brick walls, owner Kelly Muccio loosens up customers with bourbon or beer, then helps them sift through urban-cool brands such as Band of Outsiders and Rogan. Sounds nice, right?

Well, just wait until you see the Black Room.

Located directly above Lost Boys, Muccio’s latest venture is a members-only private styling studio, and the extra perks make themselves known right away.

As you enter, you’re greeted by a Lost Boys cocktail (a concoction of Scotch, honey, and chocolate and orange bitters developed by master mixologist Derek Brown) and invited to settle into a handmade Rogan Gregory leather chair. Then three corrugated-metal doors swing open to reveal looks selected just for you by Muccio and her team.

These three outfits are just the starting point for each hour-long appointment, in which Muccio and two assistants dress you head to toe in pieces preselected and special-ordered to fit you (the studio will only hold clothes in your size), your style, and your fashion comfort zone. While the inventory naturally includes pieces from Lost Boys downstairs, Black Room shoppers are also granted access to a few ultra-exclusive options. Muccio says Rogan and Band of Outsiders are onboard to create pieces just for members, and she’ll special-order pieces straight from the runways and shop other high-end men’s stores to ensure that you can find the best the country has to offer all under one roof.

Last Sunday, attorney Derek Shaffer visited to update his winter wardrobe. Muccio has been dressing Shaffer since his girlfriend first dragged him to Lost Boys a year ago, but this was his first experience in the Black Room. Over 90 minutes (his appointment ran long), Muccio showed Shaffer an Armani velvet blazer ordered specifically for him, Tom Ford sunglasses similar to those Daniel Craig wore in Casino Royale, and burgundy Salvatore Ferragamo boots—all things he would have never picked out for himself.

Shaffer wound up buying all three.

“Kelly is able to make me look like me, just much, much better,” Shaffer says. “She develops a sense of what I feel comfortable in but does a thoughtful, insightful job of pushing the boundaries and coming up with looks I wouldn’t have thought of.”

The Black Room will also serve as the US launching point for several brands not currently available stateside. Up first: Sweden’s The White Briefs collection of undershirts, briefs, and pajamas, which made its first appearance in the country during Shaffer’s appointment.

Like most members-only clubs, Black Room service is limited to a very select group. The styling studio’s clientele (men only) is composed mostly of lawyers, CEOs, and a few high-profile Washingtonians, Muccio explains—though she did just dress a London-bound George Washington University student who was in need of British style tips.

Membership is by invitation only. You can sign up to be on the waitlist through the Lost Boys Web site, but Muccio says that doesn’t guarantee you membership—apparently, there’s an interview involved. She won’t say how many memberships are available, nor how many members there are so far, but she does say that the number is limited. Appointments cost $600 to $800.

Bright Lyons, a refreshing furniture store in Boerum Hill, is a sort of one-stop shop for home decor with coveted mid-century designs (George Nelson coffee tables, Eames chairs), eye-popping colorful art, prints, and one-of-a-kind books.

Now it's made its way into 330 Bowery for a shop-in-shop, so the ROGAN Store can be your one-stop shop for holiday gift giving. Its owner Paul Bright, who curated and installed the collection, gives it to us straight.

1) How did the Bright Lyons shop-in-shop at the ROGAN BOUWERIE come about?

Rogan had been in to my shop a couple times and one day my employee Jenny told me that this guy Rogan who has the shop ROGAN was really into my shop and wanted to talk to me about putting a bunch of the stuff in my shop in his shop, and I said oh shit that's the clothing store that my wife really likes so I called Rogan and said let's do it.

2) We like to keep it minimal and geometric, with character and a dose of history. [Check out the ROGAN Objects Collection here.] What's your style?

I'm totally down with MGC&H as well (minimal, geometric, character, history). It's all about soulful minimalism. Think John Oates apartment circa 1977: a couple Moroccan rugs, an Eames lounge chair, an onyx bar, a John Wesley painting. Fuck ya.

3) Tell us about the pieces you brought to the store and how you curated the collection for the ROGAN Store.

The pieces I brought into the store all have some sort of personal significance to me. Most are by the artists or designers that got me into the business in the first place. When I started dealing in design, I only sold Knoll and Herman Miller stuff, and now 12 years later, after dealing with all sorts of decorator type bullshit, I've come back to the classic American stuff and now that's all I'm really interested in dealing in. As for the artists, they are mainly just friends of mine that I have worked on different shows and projects on over the years.

4) What's the one thing that really pulls a space together, like how eyebrows can really make a face?

A Moroccan rug or some nice wainscoting like the wainscoting they have in the restaurant across the street from you guys called "Peels".

5) Are there any "rules" you like to break? Any home furnishing irks?

Rules I like to break:

1) Sometimes I like to drink the water from the water filter jug even when the little light is flashing yellow. (That means the water quality is "borderline".)

2) Once in a while, I will stick my head really far out the window of my condo and smoke things.

3) When I hang pictures I always just "eyeball" it. Check out some of the stuff I hung in [the ROGAN Store]. It's a little wonky.

Multi-talented artist Sean Augustine March is really into mirrors. The musician/artist/designer (he's behind the hazy-sunny Dream Band and recently collaborated with Nicola Formichetti) is using mirrors as his media of choice for his latest project, a series of multimedia and mosaic pieces titled In Vanity. This interior of the Rivington Design House gallery will be transformed by these intricately designed and strikingly graphic pieces into a reflective, introspective, and interactive playground.

The limited edition series includes pyramid sculptures that glow from within, and patterned mirrors with animated lighting and even a two-player pong game. We can already picture one glowing majestically in the middle of our room.

We got a surprise visit by Brian Chase (the drummer of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, not the basketball player) today at ROGAN Bouwerie. OK, we snatched him off the streets when he was unsuspectingly walking from his yoga session in SoHo, and we ~~bribed~~ ~~forced~~ asked him to spend some fun shopping time with us in the store. The Bowery/NoHo area is filled with historical landmarks and buildings. 330 Bowery x Bond, the home of the ROGAN flagship, for one, is a registered landmark which housed the Bouwerie Lane Theatre. Built in 1873, this white cast-iron building was initially a bank, was once the Jean Cocteau Repertory Theatre and is now a condominium with ROGAN in the storefront. Even with all the changes of ownership, it remains one of the most beautiful and well-preserved historical facades in the neighborhood. It was designated as a NYC Landmark in 1967.

A few blocks away on E. 4th between Bowery and Lafayette is another NYC Landmark - the Merchant's House Museum. Touting to be NYC's only family home preserved inside and out since it was built in 1832, this house belonged to a wealthy merchant. When the last of his descendants passed away alone in the house, a cousin of the family made it into a museum in 1930, restoring everything how it was in the mid-1800's, a goal that's been faithfully kept even until today. The museum hosts several art and photography exhibits throughout the year, an annual funeral procession in 19th century style, and candlelight "ghost" tours in the spirit of Halloween, where people have claimed to have seen or heard things. Eerie on the Bowery.

And in the spirit of Halloween, we say stop by the Bouwerie Lane Theatre for some treats before heading to the Merchant's House for tricks.

here are our favorite layering pieces of the season - ones that can go over and under.

the ASURA
while the cowl neck adds some drama, the ASURA has very slim arms and body, making it more of a long sleeve top than a sweater, and easy to layer under anything.

the TOKUSHIMA
cropped and fitted, the TOKUSHIMA is great over a tank (like how we styled it here), high-waisted bottoms or a dress. we like the contrast of the soft silkiness of the top underneath with the stretchy thickness of the sweater.

the KOKAN
slim-cut with rolled-edge hems (one of our favorite details), the KOKAN's a classic pullover with a ROGAN asymmetrical twist. fits well over a tee, and slides right under your Fall jacket.

the VONDEL

cardigans this warm are usually bulky, but alpaca saves the day as always. the VONDEL keeps the silhouette slim and clean even when wearing it over a button down shirt and under a coat.

halloween is time for haunted houses, scary movies & ghost stories. this book fell on us this weekend in an old barn, as if to present itself to us.

a page was marked by a torn bit from the daily mirror dated june 3, 1950, which, as silly as it may sound, added a level of creepy authenticity for us.

Willoughby Windows, a project created by MetroTech BID, in conjunction with United American Land, Avalon Bay, and curated by Ad Hoc Art, stretches 12 run-down storefronts that have clearly been out of business for quite some time. The project seems to have started in 2009, with the most recent installation having taken place in May 2010, adding life to empty windows, and art to the local community. But it wasn't until a few weeks ago that we biked on this street on the way to the Dekalb Market (the ship container spot) and discovered some friendly cutout cartoon faces looking out at us from behind the glass.

A fun fact about this is that you can see this current installation via Google Map Street View. Makes you think about murder mysteries and finding clues using Street View, doesn't it? No?

we love one-of-a-kind patterns and the best way to create non-repeating patterns is to do it by hand. make no mistake, this sweater is knit in pattern, not printed, so each piece is unique.

the yuniwa knit pattern was created based on a brush stroke. our art director painted several and we picked the best one to make it into a knit pattern. the stroke starts on the front right, goes over the chest and around the arm, and finishes on the back right. we translated the image to knit based on the number of pixels, where each pixel equaled a knot.

the knockout komachi dress in abstract tweed

some may call this noise, we called it abstract tweed. inspired by the snowy effect when old school tv antennas fail to catch signal, we translated the irregular pattern into a knit and, like the Yuniwa, no one sweater is the same.

The Arc Vest

Irregularities keep things interesting. Inspired by Japanese rock gardens, we chose this double face jersey that was woven in a way that created riffs reminiscent of raked gravel lines and circles. The fabric's softness is also perfect for draping, so we used it in our Arc Vest (made from two fabric loops sewn together in the middle), the draped front Sansui Top and Zenith Dress.

Waterless rock and sand gardens are called Karesansui.

New Fall accessories are in! This season, we have a reversible Dent Headwarmer. Just like the old one, it's constructed like a sausage casing, so the length can be adjusted to however tight or slouchy you want it. Except this one is moss green on one side and black on the other, so it's like 2 hats in 1, or even 4 hats in 1, depending how you adjust it.

There's also the good ol' regular one-way Dent in Abstract Tweed (more on that later). As always, they're unisexy.

Longtime friends and first-time collaborators Sarah Frances Kuhn and Louise Ingalls Sturges have more than catchy full names in common. They talked to us about friendship, fashion and art, and how their work came together inside the ROGAN Bouwerie.

R// How did you meet?

LIS// Hm... wow, it’s hard to say. I don't really remember. SFK's boyfriend lived in Barcelona, Spain after I lived there briefly in 2003, and he befriended one of my buddies, Kyle, from College of Santa Fe. I think we may have met at a Papabubble [Ed. Note: I think they love candy] party years ago? I was full-on into blogging at that point, and I think I shot her outfit and we got to talking.

From there, I think our orbits just continued to get more aligned. We share a mutual best friend, Jill, who is her band mate and one of my photographic muses. I think we definitely became closer last year after a very powerful moon mama party - we both had a lot going on personally and bonded over the intense meditation and tarot readings... so yea, I guess just going out and having common friends and interests. We share a mutual interest in art, fashion and music, and agree on the importance of being nice and communal.

SFK// We met years ago as we ran in similar/overlapping circles. But yes, I would agree with Louise... that at the full moon party that time, we seriously bonded and then over the course of working on this project, we got closer and closer. She is the bomb. So energetic, enthusiastic, and talented. Super stylish and fabulous all around. Such a true blue friend to her friends and her work is top notch.

R// What do you like most about each others' work?

LIS// Sarah was the accessories editor at Teen Vogue for ages and I feel like from that experience, as well as her naturally keen fashion intuition, she was able to identify a void in the market and fill it with the greatest invention and signature aplomb! I mean, the fashionable practicality of Sarah’s straps are simply brilliant!

I've been a photographer for 16 years and been into fashion for as long as I can recall. Unfortunately, carrying a camera can often make you look lame because of the accessories, which are, more often than not, made with an outdoors-y man in mind and not a gal about town. I never understood why just because you want to take pictures, you have to look like you're geared up to go hiking. Camera accessories are generally made with a lot of rip stop nylon, neoprene and safari vests. SFK straps answers that need, that desire to look pulled together, as well as being comfortable. And they are beyond easy to switch out if you desire a different color way.

SFK// The thing I most admire about Louise is that she ALWAYS has a camera on her and is super active. She does not just say she is a photographer, she is one through and through. And an amazing artist too. She lives it, breathes it. She is one of the lucky ones that just has an eye, and that cannot be taught.

R// Was the idea always to host an event in a fashion setting?

LIS// No, but we were always open to it. We definitely had Fashion Week as our goal. When she began the collab w/ ROGAN and Loomstate, y'all suggested a September event, and from there, it all fell into place!

SFK// We were not set on a "fashion" setting but things seemed to organically happen with Rogan, who likes to be involved with art, and to keep the history of the store's location and background alive. Then Louise's long-time friend and collaborator, Katharine Barthelme, got involved as curator so the setting ended up being a perfect union of fashion and art.

R// Do you see fashion as an influence on the work you produce?

LIS// As a painter and a photographer, my work revolves around a series of choices; in many ways, what goes into a collage or an edit of photos is akin to putting together an outfit. my sources and inspiration come from everything I do - a lot of traveling, reading, researching and thus is result of a series of personal choices. So for me, the photos, paintings and fashion are all cohesive in that only I could put exactly these elements together in this way, right now. There is no doubt that my friends serve as a primary influence—they figure heavily into my photography and paintings, and certainly continue to inspire me sartorially.

SFK// Fashion is all around us, especially living where we live. I love to have fun with it and never take it too seriously. That said, I think that fashion is a lot of why I created the SFK line of camera straps. Down with generic straps!

Featured in NY Mag's Best Bets, the Kobori sweater, with its unusual shape, has stirred up quite the controversy in the comments section. Like it says in the feature, it's a chunky blend of alpaca and wool, and it's, oh my god, so soft. It makes us want to hug it. The best part is that we can layer a long sleeve top or dress underneath and wear it as an outer layer into the colder months.

SRF CTY TALK: MARIA MOYER

Inspired by the water and oceanic life, Maria Moyer creates, by hand, delicate porcelain sculptures with surprisingly lifelike personalities. Yes, really - personalities. The pieces all have something about them that's very animated, from the unusual shapes to the colors and patterns, and should be experienced in person. Keep an eye out for her upcoming installation at the Rogan store at 330 Bowery NYC.

Tell us your thoughts on NYC surf culture!

Like everything else in NYC, the surf culture is pretty deliberate here. Most people have to work a little harder toget to surf here than where I grew up in Southern California.

Who's your surf hero?

Gerry Lopez. He's the Magic Johnson of surf (can you tell I'm from LA?). He's been my hero since I was a little girl and I am lucky to have spent time with him. He's an inspiration now as a snowboarder - a sport I am much better at than surfing.

What's your funniest or most embarrassing surf moment?

Every time I get in the water, I'm humbled.

Any style rules for the beach?

No perfume on the beach, ladies. It's like having someone blaring a boom box when you're there to listen to the waves.

What are your surf essentials?

Good company. I'm not a very serious surfer - though I am a life-long surf enthusiast. I love being in the water with my friends.

Favorite post-surf, chill out spot in NY?

After a day in the water, whether I surfed or not, the best spot for me would involve pico de gallo and guacamole.

What are you most excited about for SRF CTY?

The confluence of cultures. It'll be fun to see it and to be a part of it - thanks for having me!

We asked him on his thoughts on foam dust, Marc Jacobs, the convergence of fashion and surf, and other very serious issues.

Do you think breathing foam dust makes you mad, ie crazy mad? Foam dust is great! Better than cocaine, looks the same and it's free. Keeps you skinny too just like coke.

When traveling, do you prefer window or aisle? Usually I drink a few beers before I get on the plane so I can sleep. Unfortunately, I have the same size bladder as a squirrel so I have to constantly use the bathroom so I prefer an aisle.

Many dream of working by the beach and living in the city, but only a few can pull this off. Bethany Mayer lives in NYC, and is the owner of Montauk's Surf Bazaar, a colorful boutique at The Surf Lodge, and the designer behind the store's namesake line, which features simple, sophisticated beachwear. A longtime supporter of ROGAN and Loomstate (both of which are available at Surf Bazaar), Bethany tells us what she likes most about SRF+CTY.

What do you think about surf culture in NYC? What's so different or great about it?
I think our East coast surf culture is built off of a huge appreciation for the ability to live in a city like NY, but then be such a short distance from an amazing ocean, that is relatively clean, with waves! I am starting to see a lot of West coasters & Hawaiians spending time in the east because the energy around our surf culture is high and built off of this appreciation for access to nature and waves.

What's your favorite surf spot in NY and why?
Montauk... but I can’t tell you where... but it is not ditch.

Do's and Don’ts for surf style?
Do: Create a style in both your surfing and your equipment... customized boards!
Don’t: wear non-functional things to surf just for the sake of looking good... not cute.

What are your surf essentials?
Board, wax, leash, always a wetsuit for warmth in this chilly east coast, water… keep it simple.

What are you most excited about for SRF CTY?
Getting together with some amazing, inspired people involved in the surf culture. These people are my family and it’s great to support and celebrate our culture.

Hailing from Hawaii, Tori Praver, model, owner and designer behind Tori Praver swimwear, grew up surfing, and knows all about swimwear that can stay put for surfing, swimming, or just laying out on the beach. Just what SRF+CTY needed!

R: What do you think about surf culture in NYC? What's so different or great about it?

T: People that surf in NYC are so stoked about it because it's not something that they can do everyday, so it makes it that more special.... It's almost like a "treat" and when you get to paddle out you really appreciate it... Growing up in Hawaii, everyone surfed. I lived the surf-culture as a child and moving to NYC was strange to me, it didn't really exist. There were no surf shops and not too many surfers. I love that the culture has grown in NYC and more people have realized how amazing the surfing is!!

R: What's your favorite surf spot in NY and why?

T: My favorite spot is in Wainscot. I don't even know if the break has a name, but there are perfect little lefts (my fav because I'm goofy-foot) and hardly anyone ever out.

T: Joanie’s or the backyard behind the health food store in Montauk.

R: Who's your surf hero?

T: Rell Sunn. She was an amazing surfer and such a strong and powerful woman to be inspired by.

T: All of my bikini malfunctions! I once caught a wave and stood up not knowing my boob had popped out!

R: Any rules for surf style?

T: Surf how you want to surf doing what makes you feel comfortable!! It does look really funny though, when a person has a super wide stance...

SRF CTY TALK: JULIE GILHART

Among her many titles throughout an enviable career - former fashion director for one of the largest international retailers, stylist, industry expert, influencer, and now avid surfer, Julie Gilhart is most admirably a champion for a more conscious, less wasteful apparel industry. It's only fitting that one of her current projects involves recycling t-shirts into something covetable.

For SRF+CTY, Julie has partnered with Bantu and Tin from Drug Money Art to create one-of-a-kind scarves pieced together from D/M tee remnants and 1985 vintage Live Aid tees. The result is an oversized super soft patchwork scarf meant to drape and gather, and is 100% awesome.

Julie says about the project: "[the Live Aid tees] pay respect and give thought to Yodit Eklund from Bantu whose country, Ethiopia, as you know is experiencing a devastating famine. I feel clothes can hold or at least represent the energy and intentions of those that craft them and we all like to wear talismans of things we care about."

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the scarf, available starting on FNO at the ROGAN store, will go to a non-profit helping people in East Africa affected by the famine.

As a SRF+CTY collaborator, Julie talks to us about surf and style.

Scott: Why do fashion and surfing make such a credible pairing?
Julie: Surfing is all about style or lack off and so is fashion.

S: Why is surf style so casual?
J: The less clothes the better.

S: Once you have ridden one wave haven't you ridden them all?
J: Hah! Once you ride one, you have to have more and that leads to SA - Surfers Anonymous!

S: What is your pre-surf routine?
J: I listen to music. I try to remember to ask the Mother Ocean to be kind to me.

S: Montauk vs. Rockaway? Why are they different?
J: Rockaway has better food and more tattoos. Girls have sexy original style vs. intentional fashion style. Montauk is better for rock finding.

S: We hear Montauk is getting crowded, why do people drive past so many beautiful beaches to go there?
J: Because they have tunnel vision.

S: Dawn patrols or Evening glass offs?
J: Both. I believe in the Art of the Nap.

S: Do you secretly want a Lanvin surfboard? Why or why not?
J: OMG, my secret dream. I would want one because I love him almost as much as I love surfing. I like to have an intimate relationship with my boards.
